Martin O'Neill's Celtic Transformation: Tactical Changes & Transfer News (2026)

Celtic's lineup gets a shake-up! Martin O'Neill is back at the helm and making some significant changes to the Celtic squad, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter.

O'Neill is reverting to the classic 4-3-3 formation, a move away from the 3-4-2-1 formation that Wilfried Nancy tried. This shift in strategy is a key change.

New signing Julian Araujo is set to make his debut at right-back. Additionally, Liam Scales, Reo Hatate, and Sebastian Tounekti, fresh from AFCON, are also back in the starting lineup.

O'Neill commented on Tounekti's return, highlighting his energy and freshness, saying, "I think he gives us a wee bit of extra energy. The other lads have played a lot of games now. So he maybe gives us a wee bit of freshness as much as anything else."

But here's where it gets controversial... O'Neill addressed the idea of players being in their 'natural' positions. He believes players should be adaptable, though he acknowledges that some adjustments are more feasible than others. He stated, "Players have a favorite position, no question about that that. But sometimes when you make adjustments and you make things, players might have to play in unfamiliar roles for a little while and they've got to try and get used to that as well, obviously outfield players."

And this is the part most people miss... The January transfer window is in full swing, and O'Neill is focused on strengthening the squad, particularly in the centre-forward position. He's looking to add depth, given the demanding schedule the players face, including European and league games. He emphasized the need for reinforcements, saying, "You do need to supplement the squad."
