Meet the Next Gen Triathletes: Qatar's Rising Stars
In a thrilling display of talent, the world of triathlon witnessed an unexpected showdown between a seasoned professional and a young prodigy in Doha, Qatar. On a Tuesday evening, amidst the buzz of the Olympic Cycling Track, pro triathlete Mathis Margirier found himself in a sprint finish with none other than 16-year-old Oscar Flanagan, a local triathlete with a bright future in multisport.
The Growth of Triathlon in Qatar
Oscar, originally from Australia but now a resident of Doha, and his teammate Xavier, a Canadian, are two of the youngest members of the Doha Tri Club. They are set to take on the short course racing during the Qatar 2025 T100 Triathlon Age-Group World Championships. Despite their young age, they have been immersed in the sport for quite some time.
Xavier's journey began by following in his parents' footsteps, while Oscar's background lies in running, having competed at Nationals in Australia. After relocating to Doha, Oscar wanted to continue running and later discovered triathlon through Xavier, his schoolmate. This marked the beginning of their consistent weekly participation in the sport.
Doha Tri Club, one of the largest in the region, has experienced a surge in interest since Qatar's announcement as the host of the T100 Triathlon World Championship final for the next five years. The club's popularity has skyrocketed, attracting a diverse range of racers, from seasoned professionals to complete beginners.
Aiming High, Both in Sport and Business
Despite their young age, Oscar and Xavier have set their sights high. Oscar dreams of completing the full T100 distance and an Ironman in the future, while also qualified for the Duathlon worlds. Xavier shares similar ambitions, expressing his love for representing his country and his desire to take their international racing to new heights.
Inspired by the Pros
In anticipation of the pro race on Friday, where top triathletes will battle over 100km in Doha, professional athletes Mathis Margirier, Ellie Salthouse, Jason West, and Grace Thek visited the Doha Tri Club's Tuesday night duathlon. Mathis, confident in his skills, found himself in a sprint finish with Oscar, a future superstar in the making.
The opportunity to interact with the T100 pros has been invaluable for Xavier, who emphasized the importance of learning from experienced athletes. He believes it broadens their perspective and opens doors for growth.
A Message to Aspiring Triathletes
As interest in triathlon continues to grow, Oscar and Xavier offer a message of encouragement to those inspired by the Qatar T100 action. They urge aspiring triathletes to take that first step, highlighting the sport's benefits, including improved fitness, social connections, and mental well-being.
