Shane Mosley: The Hardest Puncher Wasn't Canelo or Pacquiao! (2025)

Startled by the sheer power some fighters throw, Shane Mosley faced the sport’s biggest punchers, including Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, and Oscar De La Hoya. Yet he reveals that one champion’s capability to deliver violence behind his punches stood out as the hardest he ever felt.

Like many elite competitors, Mosley’s career—spanning 60 fights—featured clashes with some of boxing’s most feared knockout artists. In 2011, he collided with Manny Pacquiao, then the WBO world welterweight champion, a period when Pacquiao was widely regarded as one of the sport’s most ferocious punchers. The bout ended in a unanimous decision loss for Mosley, but it also underscored his exceptional durability and resilience under fire.

Earlier, in 2007, Mosley had a similar fate against Miguel Cotto, who was also known for his heavy hands at 147 pounds. Even in the face of such power, Mosley proved his ability to endure and compete at the highest level, even when defeated by these elite knockout artists.

Mosley did, however, enjoy success in scenarios where he managed to neutralize the most explosive offenses. He defeated Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas on two separate occasions, showcasing his ability to defuse danger and win decisively.

A comparable narrative played out against Antonio Margarito, another formidable puncher, whom Mosley stopped in the ninth round in 2009. Yet, when reflecting on the most impactful shots he absorbed, Mosley points to Vernon Forrest as the loudest in terms of raw force. Forrest, who defeated Mosley twice in 2002, proved exceptionally powerful in both meetings.

In conversation with Ring Magazine, Mosley explains that Forrest’s natural punching power made him especially difficult to deal with, noting, “I’m not sure why; maybe it was just natural. [Forrest] just hit the hardest.”

Vernon Forrest achieved two welterweight and super-welterweight world championships and finished his career with a 41-4-1 record, 29 of those wins by knockout. This combination of skill, reach, and raw power left a lasting impression on Mosley and remains a defining memory of his boxing journey.
