Bold claim: Winter is not just a season to endure in Cornwall—it’s a test of how well communities support each other to stay healthy. And this is where the conversation gets real: your daily choices, the care of friends and family, and the strength of local networks all play a part in keeping people well through the colder months.
A fresh campaign from the NHS in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly highlights five everyday “winter wellbeing champions” who model practical steps for managing long-term conditions and maintaining good health. The message is clear: by looking out for ourselves and leaning on our community, we can reduce the strain on healthcare services while staying healthier this winter.
Officials are encouraging eligible residents to receive their seasonal vaccines—flu, Covid, RSV, pneumococcal, and shingles—to bolster protection during the months when illnesses circulate more readily.
One participant in the campaign, Paul Sweet, who lives with diabetes, shared his perspective: staying vigilant about personal health, especially during the festive season, is crucial. By taking care of ourselves, we also contribute to easing pressure on the NHS in the future.
The campaign provides guidance on warmth, mental health, staying connected, and maintaining activity. Aisling Crombie, the NHS Cornwall director of nursing, explained that five films feature people with long-term conditions sharing their experiences and tips.
“For our 2025/26 winter campaign, we’re inviting local communities to contribute practical, easy-to-follow advice,” Crombie said. “These films offer insights on living well with diabetes, lung, and heart conditions, empowering people to adopt tangible steps to protect their health and wellbeing.”
Clare Dawe, who has managed Type 1 diabetes for 15 years, reflected, “Over time I’ve learned a lifestyle that works for people like me. It’s rewarding to share it because looking after your health matters, and supporting those around you matters just as much.”
Dr. Tom Hackett, a GP partner at Penryn Surgery, emphasized the community’s pivotal role: “Our local networks are crucial for keeping people healthy. Across Cornwall, community hubs provide support, connection, and practical help long before anyone might need NHS care.”
